When the rest of the garden begins to wind down, Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) hits its stride. Reaching impressive heights of 6 to 8 feet, this structural giant features bright yellow, reflexed petals that light up partially shaded borders or the back row of a large garden bed. Named for the unique, leaf-like "wings" running down its tall stems, it is highly deer-resistant and provides an invaluable, late-season nectar source for migrating butterflies and native bees preparing for autumn.
