Most people think you need full sun for Joe Pye Weed, but "Sweet" Joe Pye (Eutrochium purpureum) is the variety I turn to for those part-shade areas or woodland edges. It has a magnificent presence, growing up to 7 feet tall. It’s the perfect backdrop for a garden, providing massive clusters of pink flowers that the swallowtails and monarchs can't resist. Despite its height, it’s a sturdy plant that stands its ground against late-summer storms.
